Competitive Gaming App

2022

Mobile App

Background: Z League, the world’s first skill-based tournament platform because we loved watching streamers and pros compete in tournaments, but felt that there were no good options for casual gamers like us. At Z League, everyone can compete in fair, fun and meaningful competitions.

Problem:

Users have to wait several hours before they can start playing with their friends in tournaments. This can be especially frustrating for new users who just joined Z-League and haven’t tried the tournament yet. They also have to jump through additional hoops to meet minimum game threshold requirements, pay for participation, and figure out how and when to join.

Goal:

Increase in MAUs across the platform by providing new and existing users the chance to compete at their convenience. Reduce the number of MAUs that log into the site but do not engage in any Z-league products.

Challenge:

Z-league tournament supply constraints are hurting potential Active Users. There’s nothing enticing that a new user or team can jump into at anytime to compete to win prizes and have fun.

Key Metrics to drive. (MAU = Monthly active users)

Increase in MAUs across the platform by providing new and existing users the chance to compete at their convenience.

Reduce the number of MAUs that log into the site but do not engage in any Z-league products.

Solution:

  1. How do we communicate what game maps and modes are supported?

  2. The scores game developer api are slow to update the scoreboard. How can we inform the users know about the lag?

Outcome:

Post Launch Survey

TLDR: Most users indicated having a positive experience playing Arcade Mode. 83.3% of new users and 92.1% of existing users have a rating of 4 or 5 out of 5.

We launched a survey to validate our assumptions about how Arcade is meeting our goals:

  • Serve as an on-ramp for new users to get them into our product without the friction of minimum games or tournaments scheduling

  • Address tournament supply issues when users can’t find tournaments that fit their schedules

  • Gather user perspectives about the game mode, their ideas for improvements, as well as their feelings about the prizing and difficulty.

Feedback Method

  • Deployed survey via email on June 24 to two segments:

    • New users - played arcade mode before tournaments

    • Existing users - played in the tournament
